Prompt 2 - Vampire load.
Oct. 3rd, 2026 02:03 pmShe unlocked the door to the apartment.
It was completely dark, just slivers of moonlight sliced the walls. She stood frozen as though she'd never seen the place before, and she hadn't like this.
Silence draped the once cosy sitting room with a veil of melancholy.
She turned on the lamps, one by one, then went into the kitchen, she wasn't hungry, though her stomach would argue that.
Inside the fridge there was an unopened bottle of chardonnay, nothing more, but the freezer produced an individual home-made lasagne. Switching on the oven first, she opened the wine and poured herself a generous glass of liquid courage.
She felt weary, her body ached, but her thoughts wouldn't let her rest.
After dinner, she decided to take a long shower and get into bed, but opening the bedroom door, her breath caught in her throat and sour bile filled her mouth.Rushing to the bathroom she was relieved of the meal she'd just eaten in a few seconds.
There was a big sherpa blanket on the bed, she dragged it to the sofa and without removing her clothes she lay down and cried herself to sleep.
"Why don't you come for a visit sweetheart?" her mum's voice pleaded down the phone. "Take some time to heal with those who love you."
The phone had woken her up at seven, her head was pounding from the better part of the bottle of wine which somehow still refused to budge despite vomiting the night before.
"I'll think about it, Mum, I have work to sort out and a lawyer to find, you know."
"Well, you've worked your fingers to the bone for that company and as for lawyers, there's a pretty good one here in town. We could go and see him. That vampire load in your apartment will just suck you dry! Anyway have to run, the girls are here and we're off to our zumba session. Call me tonight, okay?"
After assuring her Mum she'd think about everything, she made some strong coffee and lay down again, exhausted.
She was jolted from her sleep by a loud banging on the door, dragging herself across the room, she found Herbert on her doorstep.
Herbert, the only man she'd ever loved. Herbert, the betrayer. Herbert, the most handsome man she'd ever seen. Herbert, who she still loved after ten years of marriage and now his infidelity.
He walked in and suddenly the room which had choked her last night felt full of light and air.
"You look like shit," he grimaced.
"Well, that's how I feel," she murmured. "What do you want?"
Herbert thrust papers into her hands. "Just sign it, we split everything and move on, no fuss, and start again."
How easy he made it sound!
Well for him it was, a woman 10 years younger than him, a great job... but what had he left her with?
Memories to haunt her, nothing more.
"So, I suppose you'll wallow in self pity now! You know that's what destroyed us, your pathetic inability to make things happen!"
A sardonic smile touched her lips.
Make things happen!? She was the one who'd made him the man he was. Suppprting him, making coffee all night to keep him alert, working three jobs so he could stay at home and concentrate on his start up. How soon he forgot.
"Leave the papers, you know I don't sign a thing without reading first."
Herbert rolled his eyes.
"I'll be back tomorrow then."
It took every ounce of self control not to grab his arm, beg him to stay to relieve this heavy cache of memories that filled every corner.
This invisible current that was lugged into the past, humming quietly in the dark, sucking the life out of her.
Days passed, she went to work, came home, spent sleeless nights on the sofa, went to work, came home, slept in the sofa.
She was on her way home from work, it was the weekend, the office had been empty, she worked without distractions and she hadn't got any place else to go.
As she was pulling up she felt comething hit the bonnet, not hard but climbing out of her car she saw something in the road. It looked like a bundle of dirty laundry someone had dropped. She bent down to look and saw an angry glare looking up at her.
"Hey! What's your game?"
She jumped back in alarm.
" I'm so sorry,I didn't know!"
"Huh, sure, you couldn't tell I was human?!"
She helped the woman up. She seemed so familiar, yet she was sure they'd never met.
"Look, I live here, why don't you come in, have some food and we can call a doctor to check you out?"
"I don't know, you could be a killer or mugger."
She laughed reading suddenly it had been some time.
"Me! I can assure you I'm harmless."
"Weeell, ok but I can look after myself you know!"
As she led the woman to her building and up the stairs, she once again felt that she recognized this other woman from somewhere.
***
It was when she was busying herself with the food, that the bathroom door opened.
"It's almost ready !" There's some wi....."
She froze.
She was looking into her own eyes!
Then all went black.
The next thing she knew she was aware of the doctor, Sam, talking to her . She was confused, scared, shaking and chilled to the bone.
Sam handed her some tea. Then, she heard her mother's voice.
'Right my girl, tomorrow you're coming home with me for a much needed vacation! I warned you about all this, a fresh start that's what you need!"
Months passed, her new apartment was just what she needed, a change of job, and ....
"Hey, Vicky, sweetheart, where do you want this painting!? Sam smiled as he looked over at her ..she smiled back.
She never found out what happened that day, maybe it was a warning from the future, some foreshadowing.
We will never know!
